Accounts payable automation for UK construction finance
In construction, margins are tight, and payment performance is closely watched. Finance teams already run accounts payable with discipline, because prompt payment rules, supplier relationships and the clients awarding the next contract all depend on it.
Accounts payable automation lowers the cost of that discipline. It also opens up something most finance leaders don't expect from accounts payable: a source of income and working capital.
Every account payable process begins with the invoice. Automating how it is read takes out the first layer of cost. Automating how it moves through to payment takes out the next. Changing how the supplier is paid can put money back into the business.
Where accounts payable stands in construction today
Construction companies are measured on how promptly they pay, and many markets set formal standards for it. In the UK, for example, the Fair Payment Code awards Gold, Silver or Bronze status based on payment practices. That kind of record is visible to suppliers, subcontractors, and the clients awarding the next contract.
So Accounts Payable already plays a strategic role. It makes sure every payment deadline is met across hundreds of suppliers and subcontractors.
Meeting those deadlines still takes a lot of work. Invoices arrive in different formats, and many need capture, coding, validation and matching before they can be paid. Missing data, PO mismatches and tax differences create queues of exceptions. In the UK, processing a supplier invoice currently averages £12 to £15.
On margins of a few percent, that cost adds up. Automation brings it down without weakening the controls your payment record depends on.
Win 1: Oracle Document IO reads the invoice for you
What it is. Oracle Document IO is an AI-powered document-processing capability within Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP. It reads supplier invoices, extracts the relevant data, and maps it into Oracle transaction fields. It handles different file types, languages, and multipage documents. In Oracle Financials release 26B, Oracle made Document IO the default supplier-invoice recognition engine, replacing Intelligent Document Recognition (IDR).
Why you should care. Older recognition tools rely on fixed templates, so they struggle when a supplier changes its invoice layout. Document IO uses context to understand what it is reading. That means:
- Less keying and corrections. Your accounts payable team stops retyping and fixing invoice data.
- Higher data quality. Extraction is more accurate, so fewer invoices fall into exception queues.
- ERP-ready data. Extracted data feeds straight into Oracle's matching and approval workflows.
This is the first win. Clean data at the start of the process makes everything that follows faster.
Win 2: Touchless Accounts Payable takes cost out of every invoice
What it is. Advances in agentic AI now make a touchless accounts payable process achievable. In Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, the Oracle Payables Agent works with a large language model to decide how best to process each invoice. Worker agents then review invoices, detect anomalies, verify tax, code accounts and route for approval. Together with Document IO, they move eligible invoices from receipt to payment with little or no manual handling. A typical business flow runs in six steps:
- Invoice received through the agreed Accounts payable intake channel
- Extract and validate, with Document IO reading and checking the data
- PO matching against purchase orders, receipts and tolerances
- Rules and approvals, where business rules route only what needs attention
- Post invoice, with validated invoices posted automatically
- Pay supplier, with approved invoices moving to automated payment
People still handle exceptions and oversee the process. Your financial controls stay in place.
Why you should care. Automating the process can bring the cost of processing an invoice down from £12 to £15 to between £2 and £5. Organizations can use that saving in two ways: run AP at a lower cost or grow without adding headcount.
One UK construction company is turning on Document IO and touchless AP now. It plans to grow turnover threefold without adding accounts payable headcount to handle the extra invoice volume.
What it means for margin. As an illustration, take a contractor processing 40,000 invoices a year. A saving of £10 per invoice is £400,000 a year. On a 3% margin, that equals the profit on more than £13 million of new work.
Win 3: Mastercard Embedded Virtual Cards turn payment into value
What it is. Mastercard Embedded Virtual Cards are embedded directly into Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP. For eligible suppliers, they replace a standard bank transfer with a virtual card payment. The flow stays inside the ERP:
- The supplier sends an invoice.
- Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP validates and approves the payment.
- Mastercard creates and securely delivers a single-use virtual card.
- The supplier processes the card and is paid.
Your business then receives the card statement, reconciles the activity in Oracle ERP and settles with the card issuer.
Why you should care. The cards do two things.
First, they automate the payment step itself. Single-use card numbers and card-specific limits reduce fraud exposure. Remittance data is clearer, so reconciliation takes less work.
Second, they create value from payments you already make:
- Working capital, with your payment record intact. Some sectors manage cash flow by stretching supplier payments. In construction, prompt payment commitments such as the Fair Payment Code rule that practice out. Virtual cards give your business longer to settle the card balance, while suppliers are still paid on time. Your working capital improves, and your payment record stays intact.
- Rebate income. Eligible virtual card spend can earn rebate income of up to 2%, subject to program terms, supplier acceptance and eligible spend.
From cost center to source of income
Most organizations stop once invoice processing is automated. Taken together, the three wins automate the whole journey from invoice to payment:
- Document IO removes manual effort from invoice capture.
- Touchless Accounts Payable lowers the cost of every invoice and lets AP absorb growth without adding headcount.
- Mastercard Embedded Virtual Cards improve working capital and generate rebate income from supplier spend.
- Configure. We set up Document IO, touchless accounts payable workflows and virtual payments in Fusion, and redesign the path from invoice approval to payment. We coordinate across your team, your bank and Mastercard.
- On-board. We on-board and test your top suppliers for virtual card payments.
- Manage. We run virtual payments as part of a managed service, including new supplier on-boarding and upgrades.
The result is a finance function that meets its prompt payment commitments at a lower operating cost. Accounts payable moves from a cost to manage to a function that adds value.

FAQs
What is accounts payable automation? It is the use of software to capture, validate, match, approve, post and pay supplier invoices with minimal manual effort. In Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, that includes Oracle Document IO, the Oracle Payables Agent and payment options such as virtual cards.
What is Oracle Document IO? Oracle Document IO is an AI-powered document-processing capability within Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP. It extracts data from business documents such as supplier invoices and maps it into ERP transactions.
What is the difference between Document IO and touchless accounts paybale? Touchless accounts payable is the outcome: eligible invoices processed without manual handling. Document IO is one of the technologies that enables it, by reading and ingesting invoices. The Oracle Payables Agent handles the steps that follow, such as completion, compliance, and control.
How much can automation reduce invoice processing costs? Processing a supplier invoice currently averages £12 to £15. Automating the process can reduce that to between £2 and £5 per invoice.
How do virtual card payments help with the Fair Payment Code? Suppliers are still paid on time, so your payment record is protected. Your business settles the card balance later, which improves working capital without stretching supplier payment terms.
Do suppliers have to accept virtual card payments? Yes. Virtual card payments and rebate income apply to eligible suppliers that accept cards. On-boarding your top suppliers is part of setup.
