Think You Can't Customise Oracle Cloud? Think Again!
By Dermot Murray, VP of Ideation at Inoapps
One of the most common questions that our customers raise during project implementations is the following:
"We are a unique organisation, different from our competitors - the way we do X is special to us, and we need to be able to reflect that in our business processes".
It is not important to know what "X" is, but it is vital to understand that these unique processes are what makes an organisation stand out from its competition.
In an Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) world, we built many custom solutions, deployed alongside Oracle EBS, to deliver those unique requirements - but the advent of Oracle Cloud ERP and the concept of Modern Best Practices is at odds with this. The mantra from Redwood Shores is
"You can't customise Oracle Cloud"
"Avoid the impact on your future upgrades, always be on core product"
And of course, that is correct. Customisation limits an organisation’s ability to upgrade, to address changing business conditions quickly or even to take advantage of new features in the software when they are offered.
As specialists in the implementation of Oracle Cloud ERP, our consultants are trained to challenge our customers’ concept of what is “unique”. In the vast majority of cases by adapting business processes to match a standardised way of working, the implementation will be done quicker, more efficiently and at lower cost - and with a more positive outcome for the organisation than simply delivering to an existing process. However, there will be times when a business needs to adopt a unique strategy that makes it stand out from the competition.
So, how do we meet these custom requirements?
Well, we do it using a combination of a #LowCode development platform like Oracle Application Express (APEX), and the WebService enabled platform that underpins Oracle Cloud ERP, delivered using an Autonomous Oracle Database. We host this in an Oracle Platform as a Service (PaaS) environment - in the same Oracle Datacentres as the Oracle Cloud ERP solution. With a single set of security protocols, shared master data, consistent look and feel, fully integrated user access controls and end-to-end business processes, this is delivered as a solution which augments and extends Oracle Cloud ERP functionality to meet unique organisational requirements.
In summary, a short history lesson: The first generation of Oracle ERP, E-Business Suite, often incurred a legacy debt of upgrade re-engineering. The second generation, Oracle Cloud ERP, delivered modern best practice, but stifled flexibility. We have now reached the third generation, where we can deliver the benefits of standardisation whilst enabling uniqueness.
So, can you customise Oracle Cloud ERP? No. Can you deliver custom solutions to meet the unique requirements of individual organisations? Yes! We do it all the time.
