Data Growth Challenge
The Challenge of Data Growth – How Oracle can add control to your environment Managing the rapid growth of data is still a major challenge for many organisations, and with annual growth rates of over 50% and predictions that by 2020 the total global digital data will top 35,000 Exabytes, it poses a daunting prospect for organisations going forward.
Although the physical cost of storage continues to decline, the unprecedented growth in the volume of data that needs to be retained creates a significant cost challenge for organisations. More floor space to house the disks, an increase in the cost to power & cool the disks, and the additional headcount that is required to manage them are just a few of the hidden costs and complexities of purchasing additional disks.
Oracle’s integrated stack methodology is helping customers meet this challenge. Oracle has introduced Hybrid Columnar Compression (HCC) for its Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and Pillar Axiom Storage System, delivering up to 50x data compression and a 3x to 5x boost in storage efficiency versus NetApp and EMC, when used in conjunction with Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition 11g. Hybrid Columnar Compression is a technology that stems from the Oracle Exadata Engineered System, so it comes with an enterprise class pedigree but at a lower cost entry point.
What does this mean for you?
- Improved TCO with the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance or Pillar Axiom Storage when deploying data in Oracle Databases with Hybrid Columnar Compression.
- Virtually all storage efficiency features such as Thin Provisioning, Snapshots, Clone copies, In-Line
De-Duplication including Hybrid Columnar Compression available without extra cost.
- When Hybrid Columnar Compression is deployed with the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance or Pillar Axiom Storage with Oracle Database 11g, 10X more data can be stored and 10X better performance can be realised.
- Hybrid Columnar Compression with the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance or Pillar Axiom Storage can result in deploying less storage and significant savings in both CAPEX and OPEX.
